Nel 2016 esiste ancora il fenomeno " dell'oppiofobia , cioè il timore infondato di esagerati effetti collaterali degli oppioidi. Per questo motivo, l'italia si trova posizionata agli ultimi posti in Europa per utilizzo di farmaci dedicati.Tutto cio'  rende il trattamento del dolore acuto e cronico estremamente problematico.
